Can I just say that 2024 felt like one huge sigh we were waiting to let out? Personally, I felt like I was holding my breath for half of the year. As 2024 comes to an end, this is the perfect time to reflect and recharge for the upcoming year. In my opinion, this was the year of intention. Last year, many of us - especially myself - promised that we would leave procrastination a.k.a  putting our goals on hold until “the time is right” behind us. For myself, this year has taught me many lessons, including to prioritize my personal goals and to leave the past in the past. 2025 is right around the corner and as we prepare to make our yearly vision boards, we should definitely consider pondering this year and all it has to offer.

Let’s get into five of my favorite quotes said by some of the most influential Black figures to close out 2024.

“One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals.” - Michelle Obama

Our forever first lady is right. You can never go wrong with staying true to yourself. Many have become successful just for being themselves. Look at your favorite influencers, for example. They have made a name for themselves by staying true to who they are. They weren’t afraid to share their quirky, opinionated, hilarious side with the world.

Also, let's add that whatever it is that you are trying to accomplish in life, it is important to not let naysayers hinder or discourage you from going after what your heart truly desires. If “they” (those who are experiencing success) can do it, you can too. No matter what your life looked like before. No matter how much money you have in your bank account right now. No matter how many views or followers you have on social media. No matter how “old” you are. You are destined for greatness, and once you fully accept that, the opportunities are endless.

“Money and success don’t change people; they merely amplify what is already there.” - Will Smith

As soon as I read this quote, I immediately resonated. If you ask anyone who knows me, they will tell you that I am rich in my head. If you are going to be delusional over anything in life, please let it be for reasons that elevate you. Let this quote remind you that you already have the tools to be successful - your desire. If you desire to have money or be successful, that alone will motivate you to strive for your goals.

“Those who say it can’t be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.” - James Baldwin

Listen, while those around you might be doubting whether or not something can be done, you are too busy proving that it can be. As I mentioned above, those naysayers who say your “dreams” are too “big” are literally watching those live out all the accomplishments they (naysayers) believe can’t happen. Insert shrugging shoulders emoji as you may ponder why they might feel this way. That’s not for us to figure out or try to understand. Let this quote remind you to stay focused and prove them wrong.

“Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.” - Dr. Mae Jemison

Their ability to not see the greatness in themselves has nothing to do with you. On the flip side, their ability to not recognize the greatness in you has absolutely nothing to do with you. Whether you are pursuing a career or personal goal, never allow the next person’s limited beliefs deter you from pursuing your dreams. As we enter 2025, I encourage you to take what Dr. Jemison said into consideration. Even if others can’t see your vision, it does not mean it doesn’t exist.

“I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” - Michael Jordan

How do you know you are going to fail if you don’t try? I personally have had a tough battle with failing. I am not afraid to admit that there are opportunities or things I said no to because I thought I wasn’t good enough or afraid I would fail. I would rather not pursue something than face the possibility of being told “no” or it not working out for me at the time. What I wish I acknowledged was that failure is a part of the journey to success, no matter how skilled, talented, and determined one might be. It is inevitable, but it does not define your future’s outcome.

Remember to always strive for greatness no matter what reality looks like right now. Don’t let your doubt or fears get in the way of your potential.
