Summer is approaching, my bookies. You know what that means, right? The heat we say we’re ready for but never actually really ready for is near and aside from us preparing to plug our portable air conditioners in the window and taking our short sets out of storage, the summer activities are about to be in full effect. This means that our city's party promoters and event curators are gearing up to present us with a plethora of activities so that we can proudly let our best friends know that we are indeed “outside.” I have a little secret to tell you. Your Neighborhood Homegirl has not been outside in a while. I don’t know the last time I went to a day party or a club, but what I can tell you is that I have done my research and found some events that I believe you should be on the lookout for this summer. Some I’ve been to before and some I’ve heard through word of mouth.

Ebony Beach Club

If you’ve ever been scrolling on Instagram and seen thousands of Black and Brown people dancing and vibing on the beach then the Ebony Beach Club is responsible. Who needs the actual club when you can party on the beach? The event is not just a party, but is also THE literal destination for people of color to enjoy free surf lessons, vibe out to good music, food, meet new people, and create new community.

Black Market Flea

If you are a fan of thrifting the Black Market Flea is just the place for you. With over 150 vendors, music, food, and hundreds if not thousands of attendees, expect to walk into your favorite clothing, supermarket, health and wellness, and beauty and personal care store all in one. Did I mention that Doechii performed last year? Yes, the Doechii! You never know who might pull up and grab the mic and give you one of the best mini concerts.

Black on the Block

Okay, so while I haven’t experienced the first two, Black on the Block (BOTB) is something I can definitely vouch for. I’ve only been once, but that one time was enough to know that this is one of the places you should be visiting this summer. BOTB is essentially an outdoor festival that promotes Black owned entreprenuers. Walking into BOTB feels like a family reunion with all your favorite cousins. There’s music, delicious eats, people dancing, and just all around good vibes. There is also a huge possibility you might see a surprise performance or two or even celebrity attendees shopping at one of the vendors. The event usually takes place monthly either in L.A. or Dallas. That’s right! To my homegirls and homeboys down south, you can also experience this block party. Tickets are around $11 or $12 and can be bought on their website or by downloading their app. Still not convinced this is the place you been to be? Check out a few videos below that I’m sure will change your mind in an instant.

Lock & Key

This Koreatown speakeasy bar had me in a chokehold with their weekly “Ice Cream Sundays” event. The event took place almost every Sunday around 2pm and lasted until nighttime. The diverse crowd vibed from start to finish as they danced to the sounds of rnb and rap music. The bar has an inside and an outside, and while it is not as spacious, that doesn’t stop anyone from having a good ‘ol time.

Everyday People

If you are a lover of day parties, good music, and want to be around beautiful Black people, Everyday People is the place you need to be. Think of this event as a pop-up day party. While Everyday People  may not take place every single weekend because it’s a traveling party, when it does reach LA you already know an amazing experience will transpire.

Auntie Jamz

For my lovers of those old school classic jams and love good vibes, Auntie Jamz is the place to be. Remember that feel good music your mom used to wake you up to on the weekends to clean around the house? It gives just that. Taking place on select Thursdays in Downtown LA, this event caters to the RnB lovers. Expect to hear Chaka Khan, Sza, The Isley Brothers, Brandy, Keyshia Cole, and more. If you don’t know how to do the Tamia line dance, my advice would be to learn before attending. You don’t want to be like me hopping all over the place trying to figure out the dance. Lol, just kidding. Kinda :/
