If there’s one thing the Mowry twins knew how to do - aside from finishing each other’s sentences and make millions of people laugh - was put an outfit together! In Sister, Sister, Tia and Tamera Mowry were identical twin sisters who were separated at birth and reconnected, accidentally, after an encounter at the mall. After freaking out about the realization that there are two of them, the twins discover that they have more in common than just their facial features. One being their love for style.

I think we all can agree that the Mowry twins’ sense of style was the epitome of ‘90s fashion. From the vibrant, bold colors, to the unique patterns, Sister, Sister set the tone for what would influence today’s most popular fashion looks. Aside from trendsetting, the show celebrated Black cultural aesthetics and set the tone for individuality.

They Are Fashion Role Models…

Although they were biological sisters, Tia and Tamera made myself and other young Black girls watching their show feel like we were extended family. As with biological older sisters, the younger sisters look up to/admire their older siblings, which sometimes means emulating them in certain aspects. The twins were still teenagers while filming Sister, Sister and they dressed their age and did not try to overshadow one another. As stated, young girls were watching this show, so having the twins dress in affordable fashion made a huge statement that you do not have to wear high-end clothes to stand out. Tia and Tamera did not wear designer fashion from upscale brands, and were able to reflect the ‘90s and what most children and teenagers at the time could afford. Compared to today where wearing exclusive clothes and shoes is what’s popular now, Tia and Tamera made affordable fashion mainstream.

Cultural Impact Today…

Many of today’s fashion trends are heavily influenced by Sister, Sister. From the bright colors, patterns, fashion jewelry, belts, oversized jeans, and more, there are a plethora of popular styles that are inspired by this ‘90s sitcom. The twins were the definition of ‘making a fashion statement’ and they did it proudly. It’s safe to say that this has inspired many designers, models, content creators, and more to not be afraid to show bravery and boldness when it comes to their attire.

They Made Being Different Fun…

Although they are twins with so much in common, their personalities differed in many ways. Tia was heavily into getting good grades and was a bit more responsible than Tamera, who was playful, fun, and more spontaneous. Tia’s personality was often reflected in her wardrobe. She had the ‘school girl’ look about her, wearing skirts, blazers, and other pieces of clothing that highlighted her studious personality. Tamera’s outfits definitely reflected her carefree personality and often wear vibrant colors with different patterns, playful hats, and more. They were not afraid to be themselves and showcased how being authentically you was more important than following a trend.

Overall, Sister, Sister had many themes and life lessons, but most importantly, Tia and Tamera inspired an entire generation to be true to themselves.
