As a child, no one warned you about how horrible getting your heartbroken felt. The constant crying, overthinking, and isolating yourself from friends and family because you just want to be left alone and sulk in your sorrow. It freaking sucks!

One thing is for sure, music has also been my go-to when I was feeling down in the dumps about a breakup. Have you ever been listening to a song and instantly felt that the artist was singing or rapping about you or to you? That they literally knew exactly what you were going through. It’s because they’ve been through similar situations as you. Artists are not immune to heartbreak. They go through things just like we do; they just pour all their feelings into their artistry and create music that resonates with their fans worldwide. From Tink to the City Girls, there is a song out there just for you that will send you healing energy reminding you of your self worth, ready to go out and forget about your ex because he or she is not worth your tears, or both.

It’s time for you to know that you are deserving and will get through whatever it is that is bringing you down. It’s time to put yourself first, and do what makes you feel good so that you can feel like you again. It’s time to wipe those tears, put on those lashes and that new outfit you haven’t gotten the chance to wear, call up some of your friends, and pop out…literally.

I’ve curated a list of songs by some of my favorite RnB and rap girlies that put me in a better mood when I was going through it.

Summer Walker (feat. Chris Brown) - Something Real

This song starts off with a bang. If you know you know. Insert side eye emoji. You have to listen to it for yourself. The moment I heard it, I was like “yup, checkmate.” Walker is basically letting it be known that she wants something real. She wants someone who can show her something different, compared to her previous relationships. Brown lets it be known he isn’t like those other guys. He wants to show a woman how it really means to be treated like the queen she is.'

Ariana Grande - Thank U, Next

I remember when this song came out in 2018 when I was going through one of the worst heartbreaks I could ever imagine. “Thank u, next” couldn’t have been released at a better time. Remember when I mentioned above about how it feels like artists literally are speaking to you? Like, how did you know I was going through all this? This song did that for me. In this song, Grande is reminiscing about her past relationships and how even though they did not work out, she learned something from each of them, love, patience, and pain. “I’m so f***** grateful for my ex,” she sings as she reminds herself that she is a boss and a baddie and who will put herself first. She continues by saying she will embrace the relationships she currently has in her life from her friends and family. She knows one day she will meet her person, get married, and have the life she always dreamt of.

Kehlani - Deserve Better

10 years ago, Bay-area born songstress Kehlani, commonly known to their fans as “Baelani,” released their first mixtape, Cloud 19. This 8 track mixtape gave me life. One track in particular that stood out to me was “Deserve Better.” This track discusses self-worth and knowing that ultimately you deserve better.

They sing, “Spent a lot of time, fixing my heart/Gathering my peace of mind/And I worked so damn hard/Now I love the girl I’ve become.” They continues with “I finally know the wrong that was done/Finally, know the wrong that was done/And I deserve better.”

Have you ever been in a relationship where your partner’s actions aren’t necessarily matching the dreams they have been trying to sell you? Instead of listening to your head, you followed your heart because you were so in love with this person even though they weren’t good for you. Do you remember the moment you said to yourself, “enough is enough. I deserve better?” Then this song is just for you. We love a good song that reminds us of our self-worth.

Anycia (feat. Latto)  - Back Outside

You already know our rap girlies are going to remind us that we’re that girl, while turning us up. Anycia is letting it be known that she is back outside, and is a brand new woman, okay?! She’s not letting no one tell her she’s not great. She’s ‘poppin’ out” with a brand new dude, team, and having “million-dollar convos on zoom.”

One thing we can take away from this song is no matter what happens in life or who hurts us, we will always bounce back and come out on top.

Latto - It’s Givin

Speaking of Latto, she is givin’ all types of boss energy in her 2022 single, “It’s Givin.” She will never, ever let anyone play her like she’s average, and neither should you. This song should rightfully be an anthem for someone who feels that the person in their life is not treating them as nothing short of a queen.

GloRilla - TGIF

I think we all know by now GloRilla is the queen of serving us anthem after anthem and instagram caption for that new post. It may not currently be 95 degrees anymore, but it’s Friday, she’s outside, and we need to be outside as well. It reminds me that being single is okay, and to enjoy life. Hang out with friends more. Don’t worry about what people have to say about you. Live your life for you. As our homegirl Glo would say “I’m looking fine as hell, I’m tryna be seen (Duh).”

Tink (feat. Jeremih) - Don’t Tell Nobody

Listen, Tink is not playing when it comes to the lies and games. She is going to call you out on whatever it is you are trying to pull. She's already texting Bryan, about to facetime Ryan, and call up Keenan. This song definitely gave what it needed to. In my opinion, Tink’s music is the epitome of what the girlies need to listen to. She makes music for the girls who got their heartbroken, but they’re not just going to sit around and wait on anyone to treat them how they deserve.

Inayah - For The Streets

Sampling from Fantasia’s “When I See You,” Inayah gives a completely different rendition of the song. She is letting it be known that you can call her phone 20 times, she still won’t answer. When she is done, she is done. I think a lot of us can attest to this. At some point you simply just get fed up being treated any ‘ol type of way. How does that quote go? “You break your own heart by making someone more important to you than you are to them.”
