Popular trend “Throwback Thursday,” aka #tbt, got its start on social media, specifically Instagram and Twitter. People were using #tbt to post old pictures of themselves and loved ones and show how much things have changed over the years. Some of these throwbacks definitely caused a few laughs, giggles, tears, and “aww” moments from those who follow them on social media. This is why I will always be a fan of pictures and capturing the moment; it could potentially create a warm feeling of nostalgia in the years to come.
Music is another throwback trend that has gained popularity. There are endless timeless classics recorded by some of our favorite artists that will forever bring a sense of reminiscence when we hear it being played. Music has the power to bring back all types of memories from our past; it doesn’t even have to be songs from decades or years ago.
As we close out 2024, let’s take a look back at some 2023 classics that had us in a choke hold.
Chris Brown - Summer Too Hot
Team Breezy again, of course! It is safe to say that this was the song of summer 2023. Like what a better way to enjoy a summer’s day than listening to Chris get us in the mood to literally have the best day of our life, whether we’re doing some cleaning around the house, in the car with our friends on the way to those summer day parties, or cruising down the pacific coast highway enjoying the scenic ocean views, a time was always had whenever this song was playing.
Drake (feat Sexyy Red & Sza) - Rich Baby Daddy
When I tell y’all even before the song drops, like right before Sexyy Red begins to rap, the ladies were already on their feet. It gave every bit of ratchet we did not know we needed in our lives. This song was played on almost every hip-hop radio station all over, and don’t even think you can go to the club and not hear this song being played. Drake knew what he was doing when he made this song one of the singles from his eighth studio album, For All The Dogs.
Chris Brown (feat Davido & Lojay) - Sensational
Team Breezy, where you at?! One thing I admire about Chris Brown is his versatility. He definitely got in his afrobeats bag for his single, “Sensational,” off his eleventh studio album, 11:11. Fun fact: this song was actually released around this time, last year - October 23, 2023 to be exact.
Sexxy Red - SkeeYee
I just had to honorable mention our girl, Ms. Sexxy Red again. A playlist wouldn’t be a playlist without St. Louis Missouri’s princess. Just know that when a Sexxy song is being played don’t talk to us for about four minutes and fifteen seconds, or however long her songs are, because chances are we are already on our feet or vibing on the dance floor. SkeeYee definitely set the tone for female anthems.
Gunna - F— UMean
This song definitely had the girlies and guys arms crossed, head nodding side to side and up and down, or moving and grooving on the dance floor, rapping alongside Gunna verbatim. The lyrics alone make you feel like #HIM and #HER. If you know, you know.
310babii - Soak City
What is actually freaking crazy is that this song was released in 2023, because of how it’s still being played like it just came out. Talk about song of two summers! “Soak City” definitely put 310babii for an artist to be on the lookout for, and he literally just graduated from high school. Not to mention, rappers Blueface, Tyga, OhGeesy, and the BlueBucks Clan hopped on the remix to add a little razzle dazzle and we are here for it!
Tyla - Water
Tyla and TikTok had all of us attempting the “Water” dance challenge in the mirror all year. It gave us a good workout too, having to move our bellies, hips, and legs all at once. “Water” is a beautifully blended mix of afrobeats and r&b that couldn’t have been released at a better time … during the summer.
