As a pet owner myself, no one can tell me that my dogs are not my babies. Growing up, I was a little scared of dogs, but once I got exposed to them by going to a friend’s house, I was literally begging my mom to let me adopt one. One thing led to another, and now I am a dog mom of three beautiful fur babies.

Our pets aren’t 'like our family,' they are our family. And just like our human family members, we want the absolute best for our four-legged babies. Whether it being the best food, cute little outfits, or health products, our pets deserve top quality. I am always researching new brands and companies whose values align with my goals for my dogs.

As the pet industry grows, I found it very important that I acknowledged the Black-owned entrepreneurs who infused culture, creativity, holistic health, and their love for animals into their products. Below is a list of Black-owned brands I think we should all know about.

House Dogge

Angela Medlen is the founder of this artisanal dog product brand. She spent years traveling and researching natural materials. On their website, they mention how 50% of families will experience the loss of their fur baby due to cancer, and it is linked to the toxic materials (Pthlalates, BPA, and PVC)  that have been used to create millions of dog and human products. They ensure that House Dogge’s products have been thoroughly and thoughtfully researched so that pet families are safe. What’s also amazing about House Dogge is that a percentage of their sales are donated to nonprofit organizations that rescue dogs who were abandoned, neglected, abused, and those who have health ailments.

Little L’s

This artisanal dog treat company was created because the owners of Lilly and Lulu were exhausted with numerous recalls on various treats. So, they decided to gather natural ingredients from local farms, and bake their own. After letting other dog families in the streets of New York try their treats, word around town spread, and now dogs worldwide can enjoy these delicious snacks.

PetPlate

Renaldo Webb is the founder of this Black-owned dog food company. His first dog, Winston, would suffer from digestive issues and refused to eat his food. Once he stepped on the floor of various pet food factories due to his job, he realized that the “food” being served to our furry babies wasn’t actually food, and it was making his fur baby sick. He took matters into his own hands and teamed up with veterinary nutritionist Dr. Renee Streeter to make balanced nutritional food made with real ingredients. Now, years later, all pet families can enjoy.

These bandanas are placed comfortably around your pup’s neck. Not only will these vibrant colors stand out, but you will also be able to match with your fur baby, and embrace and celebrate African culture.
